Arriaga leads Roadrunners on opening day of The "Mo"Morial

BRYAN — Fabiola Arriaga carded a one-under-par 71 and is tied for second place and the UTSA women's golf team is in a tie for seventh after day one of The "Mo"Morial contested Monday at Traditions Golf Club (par 72/6,206 yards).

Arriaga, a senior from Torreon, Mexico, posted four birdies on the day, including a pair on a bogey-free 34 on the back nine. She is in a five-way tie for second place in the 54-hole tournament, one shot off the pace set by Kentucky's Haley Mills.

Behind Arriaga's 71, the Roadrunners registered a 304 and are tied with Florida State for seventh in the 12-team field. Host Texas A&M leads the way after recording a two-over 290, while Kentucky (294), UCF (296), Virginia (298) and East Carolina (299) round out the top five.

Taylor Newlin posted UTSA's second-best score of the day with a 77 and is tied for 35th. Aimee Ponte and Brogan Townend both fired 78s and are in a tie for 45th, while Chelsea Bretcher is one stroke back and in a tie for 50th.

Round two will tee off at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
