Werre qualifies for PGA TOUR Canada event on Monday
CALGARY, Alberta — Ryan Werre qualified for the Professional Golf Association (PGA) TOUR Canada ATB Financial Classic presented by TELUS after finishing in the top 10 at a qualifier that was played Monday at Silverwing Links.
The Redcliff, Alberta, native carded a three-under par 69 to tie for fifth place in the 100-player field and assure himself of a spot in the PGA TOUR Canada event.
"It was pretty windy, but I played solid and didn't make any real mistakes," Werre said. "I thought one-under would qualify, so it's a good thing I got to three-under to be sure.
"This tournament will be all professional golfers, and I want to test myself against them and see what I can do this week. It's cool to dabble in that type of competition when I can while I'm an amateur so I can see what I need to work on and figure out before I turn pro after my senior year at UTSA."
"We are really excited that Ryan has the chance to play on the next level this week," UTSA head coach John Knauer said. "That experience should give him a lot of confidence as he heads into his senior season."
Werre, a two-time all-conference performer, now will compete in the ATB Financial Classic on Thursday-Sunday, June 20-23, at the Country Hills Golf Club Talons Course in Calgary. The field will consist of 156 players for the first and second rounds and then will be cut to the low 60 and ties for the final two rounds.
