MESA, Ariz. — Freshman Allie Johnston carded an even-par 72 on Monday, as UTSA opened play at the Western Athletic Conference Championship (WAC) with a nine-over-par 297, which is good for a tie for second place.

Johnston, who sits third on the individual leaderboard, opened her round with six consecutive pars before a bogey on No. 7. The Castle Rock, Colo., native bogeyed No. 12 before closing the round with four pars and birdies on Nos. 15 and 18.

Taylor Newlin is just one stroke behind and in fourth place with a one-over par 73. The junior from Frisco recorded a team-best four birdies and added an eagle on No. 9 (par 5, 474 yards). Newlin started her round with back-to-back birds before the eagle moved her score to two-under-par for the front nine.

Meanwhile, Fabiola Arriaga and Paola Valerio are tied for 12th with a 76 after recording two birdies each and freshman Brogan Townend fired a 79 to tie for 23rd.

In search of their third consecutive conference title, the Roadrunners share the second spot on the leaderboard with four-time defending WAC Champion San Jose State, while No. 29 Denver holds a two-stroke lead over the pair with a 295. Meanwhile, Seattle (306) trails UTSA by nine strokes, while 38th-ranked Texas State (311), Idaho (312) and New Mexico State (312) round out the leaderboard.

Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud leads all players by two strokes after posting a four-under-par 68 during the opening 18 holes.

The Roadrunners will tee off their second round at 10:50 a.m. (CT).
