TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Paola Valerio fired a one-under-par 71 to lead the 41st-ranked UTSA women's golf team at Friday's opening round of the Florida State Match-Up, which is being played at Southwood Golf Club (par 72/7,172 yards).

The senior from Mexico City, Mexico, carded a pair of birdies on the day and she is five shots off the pace set by first-round leader Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia.

Taylor Newlin fired a one-over 73, while Western Athletic Conference stroke leader Fabiola Arriaga (77) and Brogan Townend (78) also broke 80. Chelsea Bretcher rounded out the Roadrunners' scoring with an 82.

UTSA registered an opening-round 299 as a team and that is good for seventh place in the 12-team field. No. 16 Georgia (290) holds a one stroke lead over 33rd-ranked Tennessee and the Lady Bulldogs are five shots ahead of tournament host Florida State and Furman.

The three-day tournament continues on Saturday morning.
