Roadrunners to wrap up regular season on Thursday night at San Jose State
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will close out its regular season on Thursday night with a pivotal Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match at San Jose State. First serve is scheduled for 9 p.m. (CT) at Spartans Gym.
The Roadrunners (19-8, 12-5 WAC), who have won six consecutive contests, are battling for seeding with Idaho and New Mexico State in next week's WAC Tournament, which will be played at the Convocation Center. UTSA can finish as high as second and no lower than third depending on the outcomes in this week's matches.
The Birds have posted back-to-back comeback victories, including a four-set victory against the Aggies last Saturday. Junior McKenzie Adams netted her team-leading 18th double-double of the campaign with a match-high 23 kills in addition to her 18 digs.
UTSA comes into the week third nationally with 18.96 digs per set and it leads the WAC in kills (14.39) and assists (13.26).
Adams, who has earned four conference weekly awards this fall, leads the league with 4.33 kills per frame and ranks second with 4.83 points. Meanwhile, freshman Annie Kunes continues to lead the circuit with 4.98 digs per set and junior Brandy Huskey sits in second with 10.74 assists.
The Spartans (14-14, 9-8 WAC) have swept their last two opponents they also are fighting for position in next week's tournament. San Jose State is in a three-way tie for fifth with Denver and Texas State. The Spartans can be seeded from fifth to seventh based on this week's results. Reigning WAC Player of the Week Mary Alice O'Reilly ranks third in the league with a .356 hitting percentage and fifth with 3.29 kills per set, while Michaela Leonard averages a circuit-best 11.21 assists per frame.
Thursday's contest marks the fourth time the two clubs have met with San Jose State holding a 2-1 edge in the all-time series. UTSA picked up a four-frame victory against the Spartans on Sept. 15 in the Alamo City.
