Hale III named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Senior Michael Hale III was named Western Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Hale III was named the Most Valuable Player of last weekend's season-opening Liberty Tax Classic after leading the Roadrunners (2-1) to the tournament title.
The Federal Way, Wash., native averaged 20.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game and also shot 54.3 percent (9-of-19) from the floor and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free-throw line.
In Sunday's finale against host Old Dominion, Hale III poured in a career-high 29 points behind a 10-for-14 performance from the floor, including a 4-of-7 effort from downtown. UTSA's point guard also added three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the 79-70 victory. It marked the most points by a Roadrunner since Melvin Johnson III scored 29 in the program's historic 70-61 win against Alabama State at the 2011 NCAA First Four.
Hale III registered 17 points, four steals and three treys to help UTSA down Holy Cross, 60-56, on Saturday and he added 15 points in Friday’s season-opening, 71-59 setback to Morgan State.
UTSA will host USC Upstate (0-1) at 2 p.m. in their regular season home opener on Saturday.
