Roadrunners Q&A with Austin Karrer
Signee Austin Karrer is weeks away from graduating from New Braunfels Canyon High School and is ready to join the UTSA men's basketball team. The first-team All-District 25-5A pick recently sat down with goUTSA.com to discuss UTSA and his future as a Roadrunner.
What were some factors that made you choose UTSA?
“I went on a few visits there and I went to their camp. With UTSA being close to home and a DI school that was going into Conference USA there was obviously some great appeal there. Whenever I went and talked to the coaches they made me feel like family. They always emphasized character and that was a big part of the guys that they wanted and that’s something that I wanted to be part of. “
When did you first notice that the UTSA coaching staff was interested in you?
“The elite camp was really the first time that the UTSA coaches started showing interest in me. I played pretty well and they kept contact with me over the summer through my AAU team in the GASO summer circuit. Then they followed up and made it out to some Canyon games this year as well as a few practices.”
What were your experiences like at the UTSA High School Elite Camp and how did it help your game?
“The elite camp put me against some of the best players in San Antonio and it really made you step up your game a little bit and prove why you were there. There was some really good competition there and we did a lot of good drills. I just liked the competition. It really pushed you to be the best, because if you weren’t you were going to get run over.”
What would you say is the best part of your game right now and what would you most like to improve?
“I think the best part of my game right now is my shooting ability. Obviously there’s always a lot to improve to improve on, but right now I’d say quickness as well as just general strength and conditioning all around.”
What are your plans this summer to prepare for your freshman season?
“I’ll be on campus for some training in June and I’ll also be there for summer school, so I’ll get to work with the coaches and the training staff then. That should give me a nice early start heading into July.”
