UTSA finishes in seventh place at Conference USA Championships
HOUSTON — Emily Perez and Nina Herrera placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,500 meters on Sunday and the pair helped lead the UTSA women's track & field team to a seventh-place finish at this weekend's Conference USA Championships.
Perez clocked a personal best time of 4:26.71, while Herrera checked in at 4:31.93, which gave the Roadrunners a combined 14 points in the event.
UTSA received fourth-place performances from Ernestine Cray in the triple jump (season-best 41-11 ¼/12.78m), Lindsey Pew in the pole vault (12-6 ¾/3.83m) and its 1,600m relay team of Evelyn Clark, Kelly Goudeau, Shantel Swift and Venessa Onwuchekwa (season-best 3:42.25).
The Roadrunners also picked up a half dozen points by virtue of fifth and seventh-place showings in the 800m by Stephanie Wangui (PR 2:10.98) and Grace Williamson (2:16.74), respectively.
Meanwhile, Kaila James registered a fifth-place effort in the 400m hurdles with her time of 1:01.12.
April Benavidez (pole vault/11-7/3.53m) and Alyssa Diaz (5k/17:25.38) scored the squad's other points with eighth-place performances in their respective events.
East Carolina cruised to the team title with 140 points, while UTEP finished second with 88. Rice rounded out the top three with 74 and the Roadrunners scored 56 during the four-day meet.
UTSA will return to action in two weeks at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark. The three-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, May 28.
