UTSA to play pair of matches in Metroplex this weekend
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will travel to the Metroplex for a pair of matches this weekend. The Roadrunners will face former Southland and Western Athletic Conference rival UT Arlington at 3 p.m. on Friday and New Mexico State at 11 a.m. the following day, with both matches played at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (4-9) battled back from a pair of setbacks on Friday to edge DePaul, 4-3, last Saturday in the seventh-place match of the 48th annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi.
UTSA collected singles wins from Yannick Junger, Tomas Stillman, and Joel Rubio at the top three positions. Stillman leads the Birds with a 10-1 record and currently is on a nine-game winning streak. He also has combined with Rubio for a 10-1 mark and a No. 27 ITA national doubles ranking.
UT Arlington (3-6) dropped both its matches last weekend on the road at Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Mavericks’ Daniel Armengol and Austin Robles are undefeated in doubles play with a 6-0 record, while Javier Perez and Carlos Arbiza are ranked 49th nationally and own a 5-2 mark.
Meanwhile, New Mexico State (7-4) fell to Arizona, 4-3, in its last outing after winning three consecutive matches. Patrick Pfister extended his singles winning streak to seven and is tied with Germain Degardin for a team-high of seven wins.
The Roadrunners defeated UT Arlington by a score of 4-1 in their last meeting on April 26, 2013. UTSA edged New Mexico State, 4-3, in the last matchup on March 24, 2012.
