No. 12 Baylor slips past UTSA on Sunday, 2-1
GULFPORT, Miss. — Megan Low hit her Conference USA-leading ninth home run of the season, but No. 12 Baylor was able to slip past UTSA, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic finale for both teams.
Low also walked and recorded seven putouts in the field for the Roadrunners (8-12), who played in their final tune-up before the start of C-USA play next weekend.
Chelsea Parker (1-3) took the loss for UTSA after allowing four hits and a pair of runs in five innings of work.
Meanwhile, the Bears (16-4) received a strong start from Heather Stearns to make their two runs stand up in the victory. Stearns went the distance and allowed just the one hit and run while she recorded 11 strikeouts. Sarah Smith led the offense with three hits in as many at-bats and an RBI and Lindsey Cargill also hit a solo homer.
Parker cruised through the first three innings against Baylor with just one hit allowed before the Bears opened the scoring with a run in the fourth.
Ari Hawkins led off the frame with a double down the right field line and touched home two batters later when Smith singled up the middle.
Baylor doubled its lead in the top of the sixth on Cargill’s solo blast to right field.
With two outs in the bottom half of the panel, Low put an end to the no-hitter and shutout with her ninth round-tripper of the spring to slice the deficit to 2-1. The junior from Spring took two pitches before crushing Stearn’s offering over the wall in center.
UTSA put the tying run on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Stearns got pinch hitter Alyssa Cummings out on strikes to improve her record to 7-1 and seal Baylor’s 16th victory.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Saturday, March 8, when they open C-USA play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Louisiana Tech (8-10) at Roadrunner Field.
