SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's track & field team will look to continue its unprecedented run of success this weekend when it competes at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The two-day meet begins on Friday morning at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The first four events of the heptathlon will be contested on the opening day along with field event finals in the high jump, long jump, pole vault, shot put. The 5,000 meters and distance medley relay finals also will take place on Friday, as will the remainder of running event preliminary heats. Multi-event competition will wrap up on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., the remaining field event finals begin two hours later and the track finals are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. (click here for the complete schedule).
The Roadrunners won their eighth consecuitve indoor league title in their first and only appearance at last year's Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. UTSA racked up a program-record 159 points on the strength of a school-record-tying six individual/relay crowns.
Andrew Akens (shot put/59-2 ¼/18.04m) is the lone UTSA athlete on top of the C-USA standings and UTSA has four other individuals/relays that rank among the top three. The Roadrunners have picked up a total of eight gold medals through the season's first six meets.
UTSA has captured a total of eight conference team crowns and 68 individual/relay championships in its history.
