UTSA signs trio to National Letters of Intent

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Carrie Parnaby announced Friday that she has signed Nikki Long (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson HS), Becky McGeehan (Gutersloh, Germany/Windsor School) and Abby Portyrata (North Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill HS) to National Letters of Intent. The trio will join the Roadrunners for the 2014-15 season.

“Our coaching staff is all very excited about adding these three players to our team next year,” Parnaby said. “They will all contribute to the progress of UTSA women's golf on the course and in the classroom.”

Nikki Long (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson HS)
First-team all-state and all-district selection as a junior at Johnson High School in San Antonio … carded a 72-72—144 to finish fourth at the 2013 Class 5A State Championship … member of the 2013 San Antonio Express-News Super Team … three-time first-team all-district and two-time all-region performer … fired a 78-68-69—215 for a runner-up finish at the 2013 PGA Junior Championships Qualifier … recorded a 76-76-78—230 at the PGA Junior Championship in Washington, D.C. … named to the all-district athletic academic team in 2013 … four-time recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Becky McGeehan (Gutersloh, Germany/Windsor School)
Qualified for the 2013 Women’s RICOH British Open Pre-Qualifier … competed in the Girls British Open … finished fourth with a 76-71—147 at the 2012 British Girls Open Amateur Championship in Tenby, Wales … carded a 75-71-75—221 at the Harder German Junior Masters … posted a 73-77—150 for a runner-up finish at the German Girls National Qualifier … won four tournaments in 2010, including her second straight Ladies Club Championship crown with a course-record 70 in the final round at the West Rhine Golf Club … 2009 Under-16 German County Qualifier champion … received the 2012 Windsor School of Excellence Award.

Abby Portyrata (North Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill HS)
2013 U.S. Junior National Team member, where she posted a pair of victories in three matches against Scotland this past summer … 2013 Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship co-medalist with a 71-72—143 … fired a three-under 69 to win a U.S. Women’s Amateur Qualifier in Neshanic Station, N.J. … won the 2011 Virginia High School State Championship as a sophomore with an even-par 71-73—144 … captured the district championship that same year with a one-under 71 … tied for second at the state tournament as a junior with a 74-73—147 … two-time All-Metro and three-time all-district performer … three-time all-academic team selection.
