SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the courts this weekend when they travel to Waco for the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship. The four-day tournament will get underway on Saturday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center and Diogo Casa, Yannick Junger, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman will compete in the singles and doubles draws.
The singles bracket of 128 players gets underway on Saturday.
Casa will take on Lamar's Mikko Rajamaki, Junger will be matched up against Antonio Cavazos of Incarnate Word, Rubio will battle Texas' Clement Homs of Texas and Stillman will face Francesco Migliano of UT Arlington.
Casa and Junger will team up in the doubles draw bracket of 64 with their first match against Abilene Christian's Michael Morris and Niklas Wingord. Meanwhile, Rubio and Stillman will see the Incarnate Word duo of Jair Assuncao and Leonard Ivic in the opening round.
At last year’s USTA/ITA Regional in Fort Worth, UTSA collected three victories, including a pair by Casa in singles play. Casa also teamed with Martin Ayala for a first-round doubles win.
The Roadrunners are coming off a strong showing at the ITA All-American Championships two weeks ago in Tulsa, Okla.
Casa and Junger led the way by qualifying for the main doubles draw of 32 after registering four qualifying section victories. After an opening-round setback to a ranked team from Arkansas, the twosome downed South Carolina's Chip Cox and Kyle Koch in the first round of the consolation bracket before being eliminated by Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess of Texas.
