Kentucky downs UTSA on Friday night, 1-0
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Stuart Pope’s goal in the 62nd minute lifted Kentucky to a 1-0 win over visiting UTSA on Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
Happy Orere-Amadu led the Roadrunners (1-6) with three shots, while goalie Bubba Makela made eight saves. It was the second narrow loss to a Southeastern Conference school on the season for the Birds, who dropped a 1-0 decision at then-No. 12 Texas A&M in College Station on Aug. 25.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats out-shot UTSA 22-6 and improved to 5-1-1 on the season.
The Roadrunners played even with Kentucky throughout the first half, but could not get on the scoreboard.
Makela made three stops in the opening period and the UTSA defense limited the Wildcats to just eight shots.
However, Kentucky turned up the pressure on offense and limited the Roadrunners’ chances in the second half. The Wildcats managed 14 shots and broke through on Pope’s header in the 62nd minute for the only score of the match.
Arin Gilliland set up Pope’s team-leading sixth goal of the season with a cross and the hosts held off UTSA the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
The Roadrunners will return to the pitch at 12 p.m. (CT) on Sunday when they travel to Louisville, Ky., for a matchup with the Cardinals (3-2-1).
