SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will wrap up its four-game home stand this weekend with matches against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Samford at Park West Athletics Complex. The Roadrunners will face the Islanders at 7 p.m. on Friday before a 1 p.m. tilt against the Bulldogs two days later.
The Birds (1-3) split a pair of matches at last weekend’s UTSA Classic. UTSA defeated Sam Houston State last Friday night, 1-0, before a 3-1 setback at the hands of Lamar in the tournament finale.
Goalkeeper Bubba Makela logged three saves en route to her first career shutout, while the UTSA defense limited the Bearkats to just 11 shots. Meanwhile, Anissa Munson scored the match’s lone goal with an unassisted winner in the 30th minute.
The Lady Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the classic’s finale before Taylor Wingerden’s first goal of the campaign tied things up at one. However, Lamar tacked on two late goals for the victory.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-3), which is led by head coach Shanna Caldwell, is in its first season of competition. The islanders have yet to be shut out this fall despite being winless. Yvette Franco leads the squad with three goals, while Meghan Cordero and Alyssa Miller have notched a winner apiece. Audrey Baldwin has started all three contests in goal and has made 20 saves.
Samford (2-1) will face Texas on Friday night before making the drive south to the Alamo City. The Bulldogs will be looking to secure their third consecutive win against a major conference opponent after already defeating Tennessee (Aug. 25) and Auburn (Aug. 30) this season. Malcanisha Kelley has scored both of Samford’s goals this fall, which proved to be game-winners against both Southeastern Conference foes. Katie Peters has made 13 saves in goal and allowed just two scores in the season-opening loss to Memphis.
UTSA will be meeting both teams for the first time in program history.
