SAN ANTONIO — Incarnate Word jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead and the cross-town Cardinals held off UTSA, 2-1, in an exhibition match that opened the Park West Athletics Complex in front of 1,117 fans on Friday night.
UIW struck first when Abigail Koenigs scored from inside the penalty box after a cross from Sydney Solomon in the 10th minute.
The Cardinals increased the lead to 2-0 when Sarah Flores beat UTSA goalkeeper Katherine Tesno one-on-one on the right side of the box at the 23:36 mark.
The Roadrunners cut the deficit in half early in the second half when Anissa Munson was fouled in the penalty box in the 48th minute. Taylor Wingerden knocked in the ensuing penalty kick to pull UTSA within one.
The Roadrunners, who out shot Incarnate Word by an 18-12 count, had several other scoring chances in the second frame, but they could not find the back of the net and the visitors held on for the one-goal triumph.
UTSA will open the regular season at No. 13 Baylor next Friday, Aug. 23, in Waco.
