UTSA in eighth place after opening day of Bayou City Collegiate Championship
HUMBLE — UTSA is in eighth place after the first round of this weekend's Bayou City Collegiate Championship, which opened on Friday at Redstone Golf Club (par 72/6,982 yards).
The Roadrunners carded a four-over-par 292 and are just one shot behind Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech and two back of a three-way tie for fourth place with No. 41 Chattanooga, East Carolina and UT Arlington.
No. 3 Texas leads the 15-team field, which features six top-50 squads, at three-under 285, while No. 37 Baylor (286) and Charlotte (289) round out the top three.
UTSA is two strokes in front of co-host No. 36 Houston, No. 43 South Carolina and Houston Baptist (294).
Stanton Tondre carded a one-under 71 to lead the Roadrunners in the opening round of the 54-hole tournament. The senior from Castroville wrote down five birdies on the day and is tied for 11th place in the 85-player field.
Brett Hogan is tied for 16th after turning in 72, while Garrison Lackey is tied for 41st after posting a 74. J.J. Lindsey and Ryan Werre are tied for 53rd (75) and 70th (78), respectively, and Taylor Koser is tied for 63rd (77) competing as an individual.
Texas' Brax McCarthy, who also is playing as an individual, set the opening-round pace with a five-under 67.
The second round two tees off at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
