SAN ANTONIO — After earning its first victory of the year last Saturday, UTSA will host a trio of teams this weekend in its home-opening weekend at the UTSA Tennis Center, which includes the start of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play.
The Roadrunners (1-1) will begin the busy two-day stretch by hosting New Mexico State in the WAC opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Birds then will play a doubleheader on Sunday by squaring off against St. Edward's (10 a.m.) and Incarnate Word (2 p.m.).
UTSA rallied from an early 2-0 deficit last Saturday to upend former Southland Conference foe Texas-Pan American, 4-3, in Edinburg.
The Roadrunners tied the match when Tyler Brown came back to win the final two sets at the No. 3 singles spot. Martin Ayala then clinched the contest after netting a comeback victory at the top spot, where he rallied from a first-set deficit to win the final two frames by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
The Aggies (3-3) have dropped their last two matches against UNLV and Southern Mississippi. Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate each netted victories in the loss to the Golden Eagles last Saturday.
The Hilltoppers (0-1), who enter Saturday's match ranked No. 15 in the ITA/NCAA Division II poll, dropped their season opener, 7-2, to Trinity on Thursday in Austin. Both points came from singles play, as James Rogers and Jonathan Stockdale each netted victories at the first and fifth positions, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals (2-0) are ranked 18th in the ITA/NCAA Division II poll and have cruised to a pair of victories to open the spring campaign. Incarnate Word opened the season with a 6-1 win at Lamar and topped Gustavus Adolphus, 8-1, in the home opener on Wednesday.
New Mexico State has won three of the last four meetings against UTSA, but the Birds captured a 4-3 decision last March 24 in Lubbock.
The Roadrunners have claimed five of the last seven contests against St. Edward's and swept Incarnate Word in the only meeting between the two squads.
