ENGELWOOD, Colo. — UTSA was picked to finish eighth in the preseason Western Athletic Conference (WAC) coaches poll, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Roadrunners are coming off a 22-32 campaign in 2012, which included an 11-21 mark in their final season in the Southland Conference. First-year head coach Jason Marshall, who spent the last 12 seasons as an assistant and associate head coach with the program, will lead the Birds into their first and only campaign in the WAC.
UTSA accumulated 24 points in the poll. Dallas Baptist is the favorite to win this year's title with 80 points and eight of the 10 first-place votes. Texas State, which received one first-place vote, earned 65 points and was followed by New Mexico State (60). Sacramento State (54) picked up the final first-place tally and was picked fourth. The Hornets were followed by CSU Bakersfield (47), UT Arlington (45) and Louisiana Tech (41). San Jose State (23) and Seattle (11) rounded out the poll behind the Roadrunners.
UTSA will open its 22nd season of competition on Friday, Feb. 15, at Roadrunner Field against Air Force. The Birds will host UT Arlington in their first WAC contest on Friday, March 22.
The WAC Tournament will be held May 22-26 at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie. The top eight teams will advance to the tournament, which will feature two four-team pools. The winner of each pool will face off in the championship game.
