UTSA to open spring campaign at home this weekend
SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's tennis team will open its 2013 spring campaign at home this weekend with a pair of matches. The Roadrunners will host Laredo Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday before taking on Texas-Pan American at 11 a.m. the following day.
The Birds are coming off their final season in the Southland Conference where they posted a 9-13 overall record and landed a spot in the league's postseason tournament. Five letterwinners return this year, including junior Isabelle Jonnson, who earned second-team All-Southland honors after leading UTSA with 14 singles victories last season.
Seventh-year head coach Erin Scott also welcomes back seniors Natalie Hand, Mariel Maffezzolli and Kavya Menon and sophomore Irene Gandara Gonzalez, who ranked second on the team with 10 wins a year ago.
Five newcomers also have joined the roster — sophomore Daniela Garcia-Diaz, redshirt freshman Lynsey Maciolek and freshmen Jacobea Junger, Miranda Poile and Alena Shichkova.
Saturday also will be the season opener for the Palominos, who enter the contest ranked No. 17 in the ITA/NJCAA national poll. The team is led by Bianca Gonzalez, the NJCAA's 29th-ranked singles player.
Meanwhile, the Broncs (0-2), who will play at Texas State on Saturday, have dropped their first two contests of the spring. Both have been sweeps at the hands of No. 36 Arkansas and No. 29 Rice.
The Roadrunners have topped Laredo CC in the last four meetings between the two clubs, including a 6-1 decision on Feb. 4, 2012.
Meanwhile, UTSA also has won its last two outings against Texas-Pan American, including a 6-1 victory last season on Feb. 10.
