FRISCO — Sophomore Tyler Brown was named Southland Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday. Brown is the second Roadrunner to earn the league's top award for academic excellence and UTSA now boasts 27 honorees in its history, which leads all Southland institutions.

The political science major, who carries a 3.66 GPA, was joined by senior teammate Martin Ayala on the all-academic squad and he was one of four automatic selections to the team. The New Braunfels native received first-team all-conference honors at No. 3 singles this spring after posting a perfect 5-0 mark in league play. He led the Roadrunners with a 14-6 record in singles competition and helped lead UTSA to its second consecutive appearance in the Southland Tournament championship match. Brown won eight consecutive singles matches from Feb. 20-March 13 and seven of those were straight-set victories. He joins Andre Moreira (2009) as the only two players to earn Student-Athlete of the Year accolades in program history.

Meanwhile, Ayala carries a 3.41 GPA in business. The Quito, Ecuador, native teamed up with senior Daniel Moreiras to earn second-team All-Southland honors at No. 1 doubles this past season. The duo notched a 10-6 mark, including a perfect 3-0 ledger at the top spot. He also registered a 13-8 record at No. 1 singles.

The Southland Awards Committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member schools, voted for the Student-Athlete of the Year. The award is presented to the student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must earn at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution. The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the squad.
