FRISCO — The UTSA Athletics Department officially was crowned Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup Champions on Sunday, as announced by the league office. It marks the Roadrunners’ second title in the last four years after finishing runner-up the last two seasons.

UTSA, which clinched the title following Friday's night's baseball victory against Central Arkansas, finished with 142.5 points to defeat defending champion Stephen F. Austin by just one point. The Roadrunners won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy by five points over I-35 rival Texas State (78.5-73.5) and they finished second to the SFA on the men’s side (69-64). UTSA now is one of four Southland schools to win at least two Commissioner's Cups, joining Texas State (four), Sam Houston State (three) and UT Arlington (three).

The department was led by regular season championships by women’s golf and men’s indoor track & field programs, as well as second-place efforts by soccer, men’s tennis, men’s outdoor track & field and volleyball. The Roadrunners also finished third in men’s cross country and women’s indoor track & field.

“Winning the Commissioner’s Cup puts a nice finishing touch on what has been a year to remember for UTSA Athletics,” Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said after the announcement was made. “I’m so very proud of what we have accomplished this year as a department and all the hard work our student-athletes and coaches have put in has really paid off.”

The Southland Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the university compiling the highest combined total of men’s and women’s all-sports points. The Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually for competition based on a 12-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 pending place of finish and regular-season standings are used for sports that have a conference tournament. Points are awarded regardless of the number of teams competing for the regular season championship.

When combined with Southland Tournament Championships in men’s basketball, soccer and volleyball, UTSA has won a school-record five conference titles this year. The Roadrunners also won their first-ever NCAA Championship contest on March 16 when the men’s basketball team defeated Alabama State, 60-51, at the First Four in Dayton, Ohio.

The Commissioner's Cup and both All-Sports trophies will be presented at the annual Southland Conference Honors Dinner on Tuesday night at the San Luis Resort in Galveston.
