O'Brien's two goals help UTSA down Incarnate Word on Sunday night
SAN ANTONIO — Kaytee O’Brien scored a pair of goals, while Katherine Tesno and the UTSA defense pitched a shutout as UTSA defeated Incarnate Word 2-0 in an exhibition on Sunday night at Park West Athletics Complex.
In a rematch of last season’s Park West Athletics Complex opener, this time it was the Roadrunners who jumped ahead early.
In the 17th minute, O’Brien controlled the ball near midfield and raced past a defender for a one-on-one opportunity against Cardinals goalie Karly Brightwell. The Colleyville native fired off a shot at about 25 yards that sailed past Brightwell and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 cushion.
UTSA took the lead to intermission and the senior wasted little time in extending the lead early in the second half.
In the 48th minute, fellow senior Taylor Wingerden dribbled down the sideline and fed a perfect pass to O’Brien, who beat reserve keeper Heather Kowalik for a 2-0 advantage.
That would prove to be plenty for Tesno and the defense, who limited the Cardinals to five shots for the match. The sophomore keeper tallied three saves en route to the clean sheet.
UTSA will open the regular season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 when it hosts Houston Baptist.
