NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion swept UTSA in Friday’s doubleheader by scores of 10-1 and 4-2 at Bud Metheny Complex to claim this weekend's Conference USA series.

UTSA (26-14, 11-7 C-USA) will travel to Houston Baptist for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday.

Game 1: Old Dominion 10, UTSA 1
Andre Vieyra gave UTSA a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a single to right center plating John Bormann.

That was all the offense could muster against Ryan Yarbrough who tossed a complete game allowing seven hits and striking out four on 94 pitches. At one point between the third and ninth innings, the senior right-hander retired 17 Roadrunners in a row.

Brandon Bashara gave the Monarchs (24-16, 12-9) a 2-1 lead in the fourth with a two-run double to the gap in right center and Jordan Negrini followed two batters later with another two-run double to stake Old Dominion to a 4-1 lead after two innings.

Old Dominion continued an offensive barrage in the third plating three more runs and adding a single run in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings to score 10 unanswered.

Negrini finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and Josiah Burney was 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the Monarchs.

Jesse Baker was the only UTSA player to register multiple hits with a 3-for-4 afternoon.

Game 2: Old Dominion 4, UTSA 2
Old Dominion carried the momentum of game one into the nightcap registering the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on P.J. Higgins groundout to first.

After John Welborn evened the game at one apiece in the second with a double down the left field line scoring Logan Kinder, the Monarchs answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center by Ben Slaton.

UTSA threatened to tie the game in the fourth with a pair of singles by Mike Warren and Horacio Correa III put runners on second and third with one out but Old Dominion starter Victor Diaz got Bormann to pop up a bunt attempt and Tony Ramirez to fly out to left to end the inning.

Following three scoreless innings, the Monarchs broke through in the seventh with a pair of unearned runs. Following an error by Correa III at short, Slaton recorded his second sacrifice fly of the game and Higgins singles home Bashara to extend the lead to 4-1.

Mitchell Matulia came through in the ninth inning with a RBI single to right to score Correa III but Old Dominion closer Brad Gero struck out Welborn to end it.
