Garrett Jr. named Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Tuesday
IRVING — All-American Richard Garrett Jr. was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week following a trio of outstanding performances at last weekend's UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational, the league office announced on Tuesday. It marks the first weekly award for the Roadrunners in their new conference home.
Garrett Jr. continued to add to his Roadrunners legacy with yet another record performance in the shot put. The Garland native heaved the implement 64-3 ½ (19.59m) to easily win the event by more than three feet and he now sits atop the NCAA standings. The measurement was an improvement of more than two feet from his previous career best (62-2 ½/18.96m). Garrett Jr. also broke his school mark in a runner-up effort in the discus (183-8/56.00m) in addition to adding a third-place showing in the hammer (PR 187-7/57.19m). The meet was UTSA’s first at home since the 1995 season.
The Roadrunners will return to action at a pair of meets this weekend. The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will take place from Wednesday-Saturday in Austin, while the local Trinity Tigers Relays will be contested on Friday.
