Hogan leads UTSA to eighth at Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by a 20th-place finish from Brett Hogan, the UTSA men's golf team placed eighth at the Lone Star Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/7,247 yards).

Hogan carded an even-par 72 in the final round to round out a 216 (70-74-72) and the sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, tied for 20th in the 84-player field. He wrote down four of his 11 birdies on Tuesday in posting his fourth top-20 finish of the season.

The Roadrunners registered a three-over 291 in the final round and finished eighth in the 15-team field at 10-over 874 (288-295-291), four shots behind Conference USA foe Rice (870).

Bryce Alley and Ryan Werre finished in a 13-way tie for 30th at four-over 220. Alley recorded rounds of 71, 74 and 75, while Werre turned in a 73, 72 and 75. J.J. Lindsey tied for 47th with a 222 (75-75-72) and Garrison Lackey was 59th (74-78-72—224).

Competing as an individual, Kyle Francis, a freshman from San Antonio, carded a season-best and UTSA tournament-low three-under 69 to close out a 221 (76-76-69) and tie for 43rd. Reed Stegall tied for 72nd (75-75-78—228).

No. 20 New Mexico captured the team title with a 16-under 848 (281-282-285). No. 25 Baylor was second (854), followed by Southeastern Louisiana (863), No. 38 Purdue (865), Houston Baptist (866) and North Texas (866).

Gavin Green of New Mexico and Owen Taylor of Sacramento State led all players with a six-under 210. Green won a sudden-death playoff on the second hole.

The Roadrunners return to action in two weeks when they travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the Wyoming Cowboys Classic. The two-day event is scheduled to tee off on April 7.
