UTSA to face I-35 rival Texas State on Wednesday night
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to snap a five-game losing streak at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels to San Marcos for a matchup at I-35 rival Texas State.
The Roadrunners (4-5) opened the season with four wins, including a 4-2 triumph at then-No. 15 Texas, to tie the best start in school history before dropping all five games at last weekend's UTSA Classic. Megan Low has started all nine games this season and leads the team with a .348 batting average, four home runs and 12 RBIs, while Siera Sproul is hitting .304. In the circle, freshman Nicole Merrill’s 2.97 ERA and 22 strikeouts are tops on the squad.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats (7-3) are coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Campbell Cartier Classic in San Diego. Texas State earned wins over Saint Mary’s, San Diego State and Cal with its losses coming against Cal State Fullerton and South Dakota. Kendall Wiley paces the offense with a .433 average, two home runs and 10 RBIs, while Timishia North is batting .406. Rayn House leads a pitching staff that owns a 2.74 ERA with a team best 2.08 ERA and 5-1 record. The righty has thrown more than half of the innings (37) for the Bobcats and has recorded 38 strikeouts on the season.
Texas State holds a slim 38-37 lead in the series, but UTSA won all four meetings last season, including a 5-0 win in the opening contest of the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Bobcats lead the series 22-13 in San Marcos, where last season the Roadrunners swept a three-game series for the first time since 1996.
