SAN ANTONIO — Anissa Munson’s goal in the 30th minute coupled with a stout defensive effort propelled UTSA to a 1-0 victory against Sam Houston State in the second match of the UTSA Classic on Friday night. It was the first triumph of the season for the Roadrunners (1-2).

Goalkeeper Bubba Makela needed just three saves to pick up her first collegiate shutout in improving to 1-1 o the season, while Kauwela Neal helped pace the UTSA attack with a team-high three shots.

Meanwhile, the Bearkats (1-1) could not generate any offense against the Roadrunners and were led by three shots apiece from Megan Bennett and Ashley Alonzo. Keeper Kylie Hambleton took the loss and dropped to 1-1 despite recording five saves.

After a slow start from both squads, UTSA turned up the pressure and registered three of its 11 first-half shots in a flurry that resulted in Munson’s winner.

Brianna Livecchi slipped past the Sam Houston State defense and lined a shot off the post before Alexis Alaniz collected the long rebound for a shot that was deflected by Hambleton. The ball found its way to Munson and the Helotes native found the back of the net for the fourth goal of her career.

That proved to be enough, as the Roadrunners defense, led by Charlotte Husoe, Teresa Offerman and Shelby Wright kept the Bearkats attackers at bay over the final 60 minutes. The trio, along with Alexis Alaniz, Kaytee O’Brien and Makela, played the full 90 minutes for the Birds.

The Roadrunners will conclude tournament play at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Lamar (1-2). The Lady Cardinals were shut out by South Dakota State, 3-0, in the first event's first contest on Friday.
