No. 50 UTSA in fifth place after opening round of Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational
DALLAS — No. 50 UTSA shot a 304 and is in fifth place after the opening round of the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational, which began on Friday at the Mustangs' par-72, 6,301-yard course.
Fabiola Arriaga fired a three-over 75 to finish the day in a tie for 14th place. The Torreon, Mexico, native recorded birdies on Nos. 7, 12 and 14.
Meanwhile, Brogan Townend and Paola Valerio each carded rounds of 76 to tie for 18th.
Townend opened her round with a birdie on No. 1 and shot one-under-par on the back nine with another bird on No. 12.
Valerio, a Mexico City native, also recorded a pair of birdies, which came on Nos. 4 and 17.
Taylor Newlin finished the day tied for 26th with a 77, while Allie Johnston rounded out the lineup with an 82 to tie for 54th.
The Roadrunners are just five strokes behind 46th-ranked Ohio State and they lead No. 19 Oklahoma State and No. 32 SMU by one shot. Kansas State sits atop the leaderboard with a 294 and Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil leads all players following her three-under-par 69.
The event will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
