LAS VEGAS, Nev. — UTSA head football Larry Coker and juniors Steven Kurfehs and Eric Soza previewed the upcoming 2012 season on Thursday morning at Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Media Day at Orleans Arena.

The trio of Roadrunners spent two hours meeting with print, radio and television media members, along with taping public service announcements for its new league home.

The WAC also announced its preseason coaches and media polls before the event began at 9 a.m. (PT). The Roadrunners, who posted a 4-6 record in their inaugural campaign, were picked seventh in both sets of rankings. Louisiana Tech was the consensus choice to successfully defend its conference crown.

UTSA is coming off a 2011 season that saw it set NCAA startup program records for opening game (56,743) and average single-season (35,521) attendance.

WAC Media Day press conference quotes

Head coach Larry Coker
On his expectations for the upcoming season …
"My expectations for the team this year are high. I never go into a season expecting not to win. Maybe we aren't supposed to win since we are a young program, but our players don't believe that. I certainly don't believe that and our staff doesn't either.

"These guys will tell you that our offseason has been better this summer. It's an exciting time for us and I think we have a great future."

Steven Kurfehs, Jr., LB
On what he took from the program's inaugural season …
"I learned that we needed to mature as a team. That was a problem we had last year. We couldn't close out games because we were so young. We weren't mature enough. This past offseason, we were all in the weight room. I think that maturity will carry over into this season and we will be able to close out the close ones.

"Before I came to UTSA, I just had a role as a player. I knew my assignments, but now I'm understanding our defense better. I'm understanding the offenses we face and why certain things are being done."

Eric Soza, Jr., QB
On what he learned from the team's first campaign  …
"I never knew how much appreciation I had for the game of football until after that first full year of practice. Being able to get back on the field with my brothers and coaches was a blessing."
