UTSA unveils third recruiting class on Wednesday
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head football coach Larry Coker announced Wednesday that 23 highly-decorated student-athletes have signed on to join his program for the upcoming 2012 season.
The class consists of 14 prep student-athletes, eight junior college transfers and a Football Bowl Subdivision transfer.
Six signees — junior Cody Berry (Cedar Hill, Texas/Cedar Hill HS/Pierce [Calif.] JC), junior Tucker Carter (Allen, Texas/Allen HS/Trinity Valley [Texas] CC), freshman William Cavanaugh (New Braunfels, Texas/Canyon HS), freshman Jordan Gray (Fort Worth, Texas/Trimble Tech HS), junior Brandon Guerrero (Lake Elsinore, Calif./Lakeside HS/Fullerton [Calif.] JC) and junior Brian King (Orlando, Fla./Evans HS/Hutchinson [Kan.] CC) — already have enrolled and currently are attending classes at UTSA during the spring semester.
The group is highlighted by six all-state honorees in Treston Coleman (Frankston, Texas/Frankston HS), Zach Conque (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS), Trey Mohair (Denton, Texas/Ryan HS), Skylar Nelson (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights HS), Tre Rosser (Clarksville, Texas/Clarksville HS) and Marcus Wright (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS/Georgia Tech). Additionally, there are 14 players who earned all-district accolades during their career, including five all-area selections.
There nearly is a 50/50 split between offense and defense. The Roadrunners inked two quarterbacks, three running backs, a pair of tight ends and five offensive linemen. The other side of the ball features three defensive linemen, a linebacker and seven defensive backs.
“The coaching staff did a very good job with this year’s class,” Coker said. “There is a tremendous amount of interest in UTSA Football and we were pleasantly surprised with the reception we received every time we went out on the road. I think this class has great balance on both sides of the ball and most of these players should be able to contribute right away. I’m looking forward to having them all on campus this fall.”
The class has the usual Texas flavor with 16 student-athletes hailing from the Lone Star State, but Coker and his staff also reached out to players that call Arkansas (one), California (three), Florida (two) or Louisiana (one) home. Five signees are from Greater Houston, while there also are five that come from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Four more are from the San Antonio area and the remaining two hail from East Texas.
There are four junior college signees from California schools [Berry / Guerrero / Mason Russell (Turlock, Calif./Turlock HS/San Joaquin Delta JC) / Dan Winter (San Jose, Calif./Willow Glen HS/De Anza JC)], three more from Texas [Armando Alvarez (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS/Blinn JC) / Carter / Maurice Poullard (Houston, Texas/Dobie HS/Blinn JC)] and one from Kansas [King]. All will be juniors this fall except for King, who will be a sophomore.
Also transferring into the program is Wright, who has spent the last four seasons at Georgia Tech. He will retain one year of eligibility after redshirting the 2010 campaign for the Yellow Jackets. He was the 2007 Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year and played in the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Other members of this year’s class include Brendon Brinkmann (League City, Texas/Clear Springs HS), Cody Cole (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), Zach Hester (Houston, Texas/Aldine HS), Ja'Len James (Lake Charles, La./LaGrange HS), Trevor Stevens (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS), Brian Vaughn (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints HS) and Charles Wort (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels HS).
“It really been a pleasure to recruit these players because we have met some outstanding young men and wonderful families,” Coker said. “The reception from the high school and junior college coaches we have met has been unbelievable. We can't thank them enough for being so friendly and helpful during this process."
UTSA will kick off its spring drills in mid-March (date TBA) and the second annual spring game is scheduled to be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, at the Alamodome. The Roadrunners then will begin play as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in the fall.
