SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s basketball coach Brooks Thompson unveiled Thursday his team’s 2011-12 schedule, which is highlighted by 13 home games and appearances in the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off and Sears BracketBusters.

“We’re really excited about this schedule, because it’s challenging and it presents us with a chance for regional and national exposure,” said Thompson, who led the Roadrunners to the school’s first-ever NCAA postseason victory last season. “Our philosophy in non-conference is to get out on the road and learn how to win. We also want to be able to bring in quality opponents to the Convo for our fans to enjoy. The ultimate goal in scheduling is to prepare our team to compete for a conference championship. We think this schedule meets all of those goals.”

The defending Southland Conference Tournament Champions will kick off the campaign when they host Southeastern Oklahoma State in an exhibition contest on Friday, Nov. 4, at the Convocation Center. UTSA officially tips off the season at Conference USA power UTEP one week later in El Paso.

The Roadrunners then begin play as the No. 8 seed in the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off when they face six-seed Oral Roberts on Nov. 15 in the first round of the Midwest Regional at historic Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. UTSA will face either second-seeded Oklahoma State or Arkansas-Pine Bluff the following night. The regional winner advances to the semifinals and championship or consolation game to be held on Nov. 23 and 25 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The non-advancing teams will play third and fourth round contests at sites to be determined.

UTSA then returns home to host Pepperdine on Nov. 26 before playing a pair of road games at San Jose State (Nov. 30) and Samford (Dec. 5).

The Roadrunners have four contests during the holiday season. They host Wayland Baptist on Dec. 19, travel to Troy on Dec. 22 and then return home for games against UC Riverside on Dec. 28 and a New Year’s Day special against Bowling Green. UTSA also has a non-conference road game scheduled against Houston for a date to be determined.

UTSA opens their final Southland schedule by hosting Nicholls on Jan. 4, before heading to Huntsville to face West Division rival Sam Houston State on Jan. 7. The Birds’ other league home dates include Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Jan. 11), Northwestern State (Jan. 18), Sam Houston State (Jan. 28), Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 8), Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 11), Texas State (Feb. 25) and UT Arlington (March 3). UTSA’s remaining road contests are against Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 14), Texas State (Jan. 21), UT Arlington (Feb. 1), Lamar (Feb. 4), McNeese State (Feb. 15), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 22), and Central Arkansas (Feb. 29).

The Roadrunners also will play one non-conference road game as part of ESPN’s Sears BracketBusters, which will be announced on Jan. 30 and played on the weekend of Feb. 17-19. The Southland Tournament will be held March 7-10 at the Merrell Center in Katy.
