SAN ANTONIO — UTSA volleyball head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff announced Monday the addition of former University of Washington standout Danka Danicic to her coaching staff.

“Danka adds tremendous volleyball knowledge to our staff," Neugebauer-Groff said. "Her experience both collegiately and internationally will add to the dynamics we already have on our team and staff."

Danicic has spent the past six years teaching high school English in her native Serbia at Mionica High School and coaching a club team along with assisting the varsity squad.

“I am very appreciative of the trust that Coaches Groff and Stangle gave me when offering me the coaching position at UTSA,” Danicic said. “It is a great honor to become a member of the UTSA family and I am excited to give my best to help our volleyball program become even better. We have a great team of young, dedicated players and I am really looking forward to the upcoming season.”

The native of Ljig, Serbia, came to Washington in 2002 after competing for three club teams, including Oblic in Belgrade, Serbia, and being named the team Most Valuable Player for Spartak in 1997-98.

The defensive specialist was a two-time honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic selection while playing in 118 matches and 375 sets. As a senior, she averaged 2.25 digs and 0.24 service aces per set, as the Huskies finished the 2005 campaign with a 32-1 record and the school’s first-ever NCAA Championship. During her four-year career, Washington advanced to four NCAA Tournaments and compiled a record of 103-24.

Current UTSA assistant coach Pat Stangle was an assistant coach at Washington during Danicic’s first two seasons in Seattle.

“Danka was the true definition of a defensive specialist," Stangle said. "She was a phenomenal passer who made the entire team better.”

After graduating from Washington in 2006 with an English literature degree, Danicic further pursued her studies as a graduate assistant at UTEP. While in El Paso, she earned a master’s degree in higher education/administration and leadership while working with the Miners from 2006-08.

Danicic replaces her former Washington teammate, Sanja Tomasevic, who accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Miami (Fla.) earlier this spring.
