Baylor defeats UTSA in weekend dual match play tournament, 6-3
WACO — Libby Thomas and Brogan Townend both were victorious for the second consecutive day, but No. 40 Baylor beat 58th-ranked UTSA, 4-2, in head-to-head match play on Sunday and finished the two-day tournament with a 6-3 advantage.
The two teams faced off in six head-to-head match pairings on Sunday at Ridgewood Country Club, one day after the Bears scored a 2-1 victory against the Roadrunners in two-on-two scrambles.
Thomas, a freshman from Midland, dispatched Natalia Perez, 5-and-4. Meanwhile, Townend, a sophomore from England who teamed with Thomas for a 4-up victory on Saturday, posted the largest winning margin of the day in a 7-and-6 decision against Louise Goteau-Chovelon.
However, Baylor won the other four matches to capture the day.
Hayley Davis edged Fabiola Arriaga and Maggie Beth Byers defeated Aimee Ponte, both by 2-and-1 counts. Laura Lonardi beat Taylor Newlin, 6-and-5, and Hadas Libman posted a 3-and-2 win over Chelsea Bretcher.
The Roadrunners will return to the course when they travel to Gulf Shores, Ala., to compete in their first-ever Conference USA Championship from April 21-23.
