King leads UTSA past Northwestern State, 62-49

WACO — UTSA notched its second consecutive victory with a wire-to-wire 62-49 victory against Northwestern State on Thursday in the opening game of the Athletes in Action Classic.

Kamra King led the Roadrunners (2-2) in scoring for the third straight game with 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from the 3-point arc. Niaga Mitchell-Cole was the only other Roadrunner in double-figures with 13 and Tesha Smith chipped in seven points and ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds to help UTSA climb to .500 on the season and hand the Lady Demons their first loss of the season.

Janelle Perez scored a team-high nine points for Northwestern State (3-1).

UTSA got four points from Mitchell-Cole in a game-opening 10-2 run. After the Lady Demons cut the lead to 14-13, King led a 17-4 stretch with three 3-pointers to put UTSA ahead, 31-17. Ashley Splaletta also had added a trey in the first-half surge that saw the Birds go 4-for-9 from behind the arc.

King scored 11 points in the opening 20 minutes by going 3-for-4 from behind the line and knocking down a pair of free throws. UTSA used a 22-16 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive boards, and attempted nine more shots than Northwestern State.

The Roadrunners continued to stretch their lead throughout the second half and they led by as many as 25 points following Dwanisha Tate’s layup at the 10:57 mark. UTSA continued its dominance on the boards with a 27-14 advantage with Smith leading the way with a half dozen.

The Birds will continue tournament play at 5 p.m. on Friday against Savannah State (2-0).
