UTSA to host Sam Houston State on Tuesday night
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open a season-long seven-game home stand on Tuesday night when it hosts former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Roadrunners (24-19) have won five of their last seven games and are coming off a weekend series victory at Dallas Baptist.
Riley Good's solo home run in the 13th inning helped UTSA to a 5-4 victory in the series opener. After the Patriots recorded a 5-2 victory the following day, the Birds cruised to a 7-2 win in the finale behind Michael Kraft's seven shutout frames of two-hit ball. Daniel Rockett paced the offense on Sunday with a triple, home run and five RBIs.
UTSA leads the Western Athletic Conference with a .310 batting average and 466 hits. The Roadrunners also rank second with 80 doubles and third in slugging percentage (.435) and on-base percentage (.382).
Rockett leads the Birds with a .361 batting average to go along with his nine doubles, two triples, eight homers and 36 RBIs. RJ Perucki has continued his strong junior campaign by hitting .356 with 10 doubles, nine long balls and 37 RBIs.
Meanwhile, UTSA's bullpen has been dominant of late.
In the last five games, the Roadrunners' relief corps has posted a 0.71 ERA, allowing just two runs in 25.1 innings of work.
Matt Sims (3-0, 2.70 ERA), who is scheduled to make his first start on the mound since April 5, 2011, has anchored the pen during this span. He is 2-0 with one save and has not allowed a run in his last three outings. The right-hander has limited opponents to a .083 batting average in his last 7.2 frames.
The Bearkats (27-17) enter Tuesday's matchup on a five-game winning streak and they swept a Southland Conference series at Northwestern State last weekend.Kevin Miller leads the club with a .362 batting average, while Hayden Simerly is the top power threat with eight home runs and 34 RBIs.
The Bearkats have not announced their starting pitcher for the contest.
Tuesday marks the 73rd meeting all-time between the two teams with Sam Houston State holding a 37-35 advantage. The Bearkats have won the last 10 matchups, including a three-game sweep of UTSA last season at the Bird Bath.
