SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA Career Center recently hosted a workshop presented by Matt Foxall of AXA Advisors that helped student-athletes understand several different facets of preparing for future careers.

The presentation, called "The Power of Loving What You Do," helped show the student-athletes what to expect when preparing to enter a professional career field. Several demonstrated professional dress for the workshop by using the Career Center's Career Closet, which allows them to borrow outfits for interviews instead of having to purchase them on their own. They also went through a mock interview session with the Career Center staff.

Both events are part of numerous services the Career Center provides for all UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni.

"I encourage our student-athletes to place an emphasis on their career development early on and throughout their collegiate careers," Career Counselor Stefanie Cisneros said. "This is done by assisting them in developing a plan unique to their situation and career goals. We work together through a self-assessment process to explore and make decisions on career paths. Our ultimate goal is to make each student better able to market themselves upon graduation."

The UTSA Career Center assists student-athletes in identifying and presenting the distinctive characteristics developed and exhibited through participation in their sport. It teaches them job search skills such as resume development, interview preparation, dressing for success, dining etiquette and networking. These skills are taught through both individual appointments, as well as through workshops in which employers provide feedback and coaching to assist students in developing better interview skills.
