Lamar blanks Roadrunners, 4-0
BEAUMONT — Eight Lamar pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout and the Cardinals handed UTSA a 4-0 setback on Wednesday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-17), who were limited to just three singles, were blanked for the for the second time this season. John Welborn, who was 1-for-3, recorded an infield single in the third to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Meanwhile, Lamar (27-11) tallied eight hits and scored in four different innings to defeat its former Southland Conference foe.
The Cardinals were led at the plate by V.J. Bunner, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Bunner's first-inning RBI double started the scoring.
Four frames later, Lamar manufactured a run.
After Seth Dornak led off with a two-bagger, he was lifted for pinch runner Jake Sutton, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Aaron Olivas' single through the right side of the infield.
The Cardinals plated two more in the sixth to put the contest out of reach.
Starting pitcher Lance Warren (1-1) received the win in the predetermined start after striking out two over a pair of scoreless stanzas. Lamar's bullpen took over from there, allowing only one runner to reach scoring position in the final seven frames.
The Cardinals also turned four double plays.
UTSA starter Michael Kraft (1-5) surrendered four runs on six hits in his 5.1 innings of work. The left-hander walked one and fanned a half dozen.
UTSA will open a three-game Western Athletic Conference series with Sacramento State (21-15, 7-5 WAC) on Friday night. The set is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
