No. 50 UTSA finishes fifth at Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational
DALLAS — No. 50 UTSA concluded play at the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational on Sunday with a 311 for a three-round total of 923 (304-308-311) to finish one stroke ahead of tournament host and 32nd-ranked SMU for fifth place.
The Roadrunners, who recorded their second top-five finish of the season, finished eight shots behind No. 35 Denver and 12 shots in front of 23rd-ranked Notre Dame.
Junior Fabiola Arriaga led the squad with a 229 (75-76-78) and she finished just one shot out of the top 10. The Torreon, Mexico, native birdied No. 8 after starting on the course’s fourth hole and finished the event with seven birdies.
Junior Taylor Newlin and senior Paola Valerio were not far behind, as the pair finished tied for 20th with a 231.
Newlin carded a pair of birdies en route to a final round 76, while Valerio’s three birdies helped push the Mexico City native to a round of 77.
Meanwhile, freshman Brogan Townend finished in 23rd place with a 232 (76-76-80) and classmate Allie Johnston carded a 253 (82-82-89) to tie for 67th.
Led by individual champion Julie Yang (70-68-72−210) No. 19 Oklahoma State took the tournament crown by five shots with an 896 (305-295-296).
UTSA will be back in action in two weeks at the Western Athletic Conference Championship. The three-day tournament tees off on April 22 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
