Pair of program records fall at Armory Collegiate Invitational
NEW YORK CITY — The UTSA women's track & field team saw a pair of program records fall at this weekend's Armory Collegiate Classic.
The distance medley relay of juniors Nina Herrera and Grace Williamson, sophomore Stephanie Wangui and junior Alyssa Diaz clocked an 11:41.25 en route to a third-place finish on Friday night. That broke the program's nine-year-old record by more than eight seconds and extended the Roadrunners' lead in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) standings to a commanding 25 seconds.
Meanwhile, senior Zaquita McClanahan added three-quarters of an inch to her shot put mark with a measurement of 47-8 ½ (14.54m). That was good for 15th place in the 60-woman championship flight.
Diaz led a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000m Eastern division race on the meet's opening day with a personal record of 9:55.25 (No. 2 on UTSA's all-time performers list). Juniors Isabel Balbontin (10:00.16) and Samantha Fish (10:05.42) finished second and third, respectively.
UTSA will take the next two weeks off before competing at the WAC Championships from Feb. 21-23 in Albuquerque, N.M.
