INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — San Antonio will host the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Second & Third Rounds for the first time on March 21 & 23 at the AT&T Center, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee announced on Monday.

The two-day event will bring eight teams to the Alamo City for a half dozen games, four on the opening day and a pair on March 23 that will determine two of the teams that advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

Other second- and third-round sites and hosts for 2014 include Buffalo (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), Milwaukee (Marquette), Orlando (Stetson) and Spokane (Washington State) on March 20 & 22 and Raleigh (North Carolina State), San Diego (San Diego State) and St. Louis (Missouri Valley Conference) on March 21 & 23.

The regional sites are Anaheim (Big West Conference), Indianapolis (Horizon League), Memphis (Memphis) and New York (St. John’s/Big East Conference).

The 2014 Final Four will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

“We’re very excited to be selected to host another great NCAA basketball event,” UTSA Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said. “The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, which is made up of the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Sports and UTSA, is an outstanding group of experienced people who do an amazing job hosting these events. We at UTSA are proud to be a part of that. We’re looking forward to putting on another great show.”

“San Antonio Sports is proud to be a member of the local organizing committee for this NCAA preliminary round tournament, and we look forward to marketing individual tickets and ticket package sales along with securing volunteers,” Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of San Antonio Sports, said. “It’s exciting that an NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball event will return to the Alamo City.”

“Hosting a marquee event like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time is a terrific opportunity,” said Rick Pych, Spurs Sports & Entertainment President of Business Operations. “We are really looking forward to having the NCAA participants and fans share in the same great experience that Spurs fans have come to expect when they visit the AT&T Center.”

It will mark the ninth NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship event that UTSA will have hosted and the first that is not a Regional or Final Four. It also will be the second NCAA postseason event to be held at the AT&T Center, joining the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball San Antonio Regional.

Combined with the Nov. 1 announcement that the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf San Antonio Regional and 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Central Regional will be held at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, UTSA will eventually serve as host institution for 17 NCAA Championship events dating back to 1997.

UTSA last hosted an NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship event in 2011 when VCU upset Florida State and Kansas in the Southwest Regional to advance to the Final Four.
