FRISCO — UTSA junior Devin Gibson was named second-team All-Southland Conference, Melvin Johnson III was tabbed Freshman of the Year and seniors Omar Johnson and Morris Smith IV picked up honorable mention accolades, as the league office announced its all-conference teams on Tuesday.
Gibson, a 6-0 guard from Houston, was honored for the third time in his UTSA career, the second as a second teamer. The 2008 Southland Freshman of the Year and second-team performer leads the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game and assists (4.5 apg/2nd SLC), while he also is contributing 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals (4th SLC) per contest. Gibson is shooting 82.1 percent (128-156) from the free-throw line, which ranks second in the league and his 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio (130 assists/68 turnovers) stands sixth. Gibson, who was an All-Southland Tournament player and third-team honoree last season, collected Southland Player of the Week accolades on Feb. 22 after averaging 20 points, 4.5 rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in victories against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State. Gibson has scored in double figures 21 times this season, including four 20-point outings.
Gibson, who ranks ninth on UTSA’s all-time scoring list with 1,098 points, becomes just the third Roadrunner in program history to earn at least three all-conference certificates (honorable mention not included), joining four-time performer Devin Brown (1999-2002) and three-time honoree Keith Horne (1990-91 Trans America Athletic Conference/1992 SLC).
Johnson III, a 6-5 guard, was chosen as the league’s top freshman, giving UTSA two of the last three awards and four total (Gibson, 2008/Kurt Attaway, 2004/Devin Brown, 1999). The Dallas native is averaging 7.7 points per game and is firing at a team-best 42.6-percent clip (43-101) from beyond the 3-point line, which ranks fourth in the league. Johnson III also leads the team at the charity stripe at 86.5 percent (45-52) and has also posted 47 rebounds, nine steals and five assists this season. He has reached double figures nine times, including 20 in the 84-58 win against McMurry on Jan. 3.
Johnson, a 5-7 guard, garnered honorable mention accolades for the second straight season. The Philadelphia native is averaging 11.2 points, 3.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game and he has posted 27 steals and drained 39 3-pointers this season. Johnson was named Southland Player of the Week on March 1 after recording 19 points, 7.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in victories against Northwestern State and Lamar. He has registered double figures in 19 contests, including a career-high 21 points to go along with a career-best nine assists against Northwestern State.
Smith IV, a 6-4 guard, picked up his first honorable mention all-conference award. The St. Louis native is averaging 12.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game and he leads the team with 64 3-pointers, which ranks 10th on UTSA’s single-season chart. Smith has scored double digits in 20 contests, including a pair of 20-point performances. He drained 6-of-8 from downtown en route to a season-high 22 points in the McNeese State win and poured in 21 in the victory at Lamar.
Marquez Haynes of UT Arlington was named Southland Player of the Year, while Gilberto Clavell and Bob Marlin of Sam Houston State were selected Newcomer and Coach of the Year, respectively.
Haynes was joined on the first team by Kevin Palmer of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Anatoly Bose of Nicholls and Ashton Mitchell and Corey Allmond of Sam Houston State.
Gibson and Clavell were joined on the second team by Patrick Sullivan of Southeastern Louisiana, Eddie Williams of Stephen F. Austin and Justin Nabors of Lamar.
The third team was made up of Cameron Johnson of Texas State, Demond Watt of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Will Pratt of Northwestern State, Patrick Richard of McNeese State and Walt Harris of Stephen F. Austin.
Mitch Reuter (Central Arkansas), Fred Hunter (Nicholls), William Mosley (Northwestern State) and Jereal Scott (Stephen F. Austin) also were honorable mention selections.
The all-conference teams were chosen from a combined vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
